[L@FT] Best friend?

[L@FT] Best friend?

Kristi

NOTE: This entry was written by my wife, Kristi. It was part of a blog we co-authored called “Love at First Touch” from 2011-2013.

I returned home this afternoon after a long weekend with Jesse.  We did the most mundane things and had a blast doing them.  Even grocery shopping and dish washing is fun with Jesse.  There is something to be said for spending your life with your best friend.

Is Jesse my best friend?  I want him to be, and I believe he will be.  I am not ready to call him that because I take the term very seriously.  The position was once held by the same person for about 20 years until she passed away.  She worked hard to earn her rightful title, and her successor has big shoes to fill.

I’ve never dated a person I called friend.  For a long time I thought these were mutually exclusive.  As I grow closer to Jesse every day I become more and more convinced that my true soul mate will be the person who can be both for me.  I used to say that no one person could be all the things that I needed in a partner and friend.  I didn’t think it was possible, but now I see that it is not only possible but absolutely essential to my happiness.

Every weekend I spend with Jesse moves us closer to being best friends.  Every day we discover new things we have in common and add to our list of things we simply must do together.  This weekend, for example, we realized that we both love Barnum’s Animal Crackers in the little circus train car box.  We shared a box in the car as we drove from store to store.  Later that evening, we marveled at how, years ago, we were both pursing the same hobbies and interests (web design)  even though we’d never met.  We mourned the fact that we never had the chance to do certain things together.  And we celebrated the Fate that finally brought us together.  It was a fantastic weekend.

As I sit in bed alone, missing my lovely Jesse, I smile because I may soon have a best friend again.
